The Indian government has proposed a “Draft Electricity (promoting renewable energy through Green Energy Open Access) Rules, 2021” for the purchase and consumption of green energy, including the energy from waste-to-energy plants. The union power ministry has put the draft online from August 16, seeking suggestions and comments from stakeholders within 30 days.
Biodiversity plays an important role in balancing the ecosystem and maintaining the continuity of life on earth. Many species of fauna and flora are becoming extinct due to the increasing human population, deforestation, poaching, pollution, and global warming. Therefore, the threat looming over biodiversity is also posing a risk to human existence. According to the report of the IPCC supported by the United Nations, about 25 percent of plant and animal species are facing the threat of extinction. If concerted efforts are not made for the conservation of biodiversity, then in the coming few decades, more than one million species of animals, birds and plants will become extinct.
A recent study has unveiled vulnerable green and open spaces across the UK that are under threat from development, contradicting the notion of their protection against urban sprawl. Guildford in Surrey emerged as the area with the most at-risk greenbelt land due to its rapidly growing population, which has surged by 9.63% since 2013. Despite having 22,636 hectares of greenbelt space, the town has experienced an 80% increase in housing construction over the past decade.
In the Himalayas, landslides have stopped being rare accidents. They are becoming routine, almost predictable. Himachal Pradesh saw more than 400 deaths in July–August 2023 alone, triggered by torrential rains and worsened by reckless slope-cutting for roads and buildings. Uttarakhand has been on the same path. By 2025, nearly 65 per cent of monsoon days featured extreme weather events almost double the proportion in 2022, according to data from the state’s emergency operation centre. Flash floods and landslides in Uttarkashi this season killed at least 48 people, while more than 100 remain missing.
