Climate Action Too Serious for One Nation Alone: Dr Jitendra Singh

At the “Technology and Innovation Conclave 2.0” held in New Delhi, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr Jitendra Singh, reiterated that combating climate change is a global imperative that no single country can tackle in isolation. Emphasising the need for collective action, Dr Singh said that climate change “is too serious a subject to be left to one nation alone,” and highlighted the importance of international cooperation to develop effective solutions.

Dr Singh underlined India’s readiness to assume a larger global role in Artificial Intelligence (AI)-led climate action, asserting that AI technologies can significantly enhance climate resilience and disaster preparedness. However, he stressed that AI must not replace human insight. Instead, it should complement human judgment, institutional collaboration, and global partnerships to build robust systems capable of tackling extreme weather events and environmental challenges.

Speaking at the conclave, which was jointly organized by the Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology (APCTT) under the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and India’s Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Dr Singh emphasised the necessity of bridging technological innovation with human oversight. He cautioned against uncritical reliance on automated systems, noting that machines—even with impressive performance metrics—cannot fully replace the nuanced understanding and empathy that human participation brings.

Highlighting India’s evolving role on the global climate stage, Dr Singh pointed out that the country’s geographic diversity provides unique opportunities to develop adaptive climate solutions that can benefit other nations. He also inaugurated an innovation exhibition and presented awards to winners of a climate-focused hackathon, underscoring India’s support for collaborative research and actionable climate technologies.
