Heavy Rain, Landslides Shut Schools Across Himachal Pradesh

In Himachal Pradesh, torrential rainfall over recent days has triggered widespread landslides and flash floods, prompting authorities to close educational institutions in multiple districts as a precautionary measure.

The state’s meteorological department issued red alerts for intense rain, especially in hilly zones prone to slope failure. In response, the government ordered the shutdown of both government and private schools in at least five districts. Local administrators cited concerns over road blockages, waterlogging, and the risk of further landslides as the rationale for the closures.

In Shimla, one of the worst-affected areas, a landslide struck close to a school building, forcing its temporary suspension. Several roads including key circulation routes in and around the city were obstructed, complicating rescue and relief operations. In Kangra district, connectivity to McLeodganj was interrupted when a landslide severed critical access, stranding residents and commuters. Reports also emerged of structural damage in parts of Kumarsain following land slippage.

State disaster management teams and local authorities have mobilised to clear debris, assess damaged infrastructure, and restore essential services. As of now, dozens of roads remain impassable, and several power and water supply systems have been affected. The closure of schools is not expected to be brief; officials indicate the shutdown will continue until safety can be assured and transport links reinstated.

Residents have been urged to avoid low-lying and slope‐adjacent areas, and to strictly follow all advisories from the meteorological and disaster response departments. As rainfall continues in the region, emergency teams remain on alert for new incidents.
