IISc Research Team Develops Low-carbon Bricks

Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru have developed an energy-efficient method for manufacturing low-carbon bricks from demolitions and construction waste.

This method has dual advantages because it solves disposal problems associated with construction waste (almost 100 million tonnes per annum) and is also very energy-efficient. Fly ash and ground slag was used for characterizing the thermal, structural, and durability characteristics of Low-C bricks and their masonry. Based on the optimum binder proportions, the compressed bricks were manufactured and were found perfect after examining their engineering characteristics. Prof BVV Reddy who led the research team said that a start-up has been registered and production will begin soon. More such start-ups will come up in the future as well.
