  • Earth on 'Catastrophic' Path, Running Out of Time: UN Report

    A new UN report on the global emissions targets states that the planet is heading towards a 2.7 degrees rise in temperature by the end of the century. The UN Secretary-General termed the situation as ‘catastrophic.’ According to the report, there will be a 16% increase in global emissions by 2030 in comparison to the 2010 level, this will lead to a warming of 2.7 degrees above the pre-industrial levels before the year 2100.

  • India proposes new green energy rules to promote renewable power

    The Indian government has proposed a “Draft Electricity (promoting renewable energy through Green Energy Open Access) Rules, 2021” for the purchase and consumption of green energy, including the energy from waste-to-energy plants. The union power ministry has put the draft online from August 16, seeking suggestions and comments from stakeholders within 30 days.

It is worth mentioning that India spends almost INR 12 lakh crores annually to meet its energy needs. The state’s ITE&C and Forest Departments are teaming with Marut Drones, a tech start-up in Hyderabad to initiate this ambitious and innovative afforestation drive.

    The Union Environment Ministry announced the recognition of four more Indian sites - two each from Gujarat and Haryana, as wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. India now has 46 such sites in total.

    Extreme weather disasters continue to claim lives across the globe. A report by the International Federation of Red Cross states that nearly 140 million people have been impacted by these events in Asia, Sub-saharan Africa, and other areas. The report cites several major disasters which include heatwaves in western Europe, monsoon flooding in India (2020), and cyclones like Amphan in South Asia which affected 20 million people.
