India’s First Carbon Neutral Farm

A seed farm, located in Aluva was declared to be the first carbon-neutral farm. The announcement was made by Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. This marked a milestone event for India in its mission to reduce carbon emissions.

Carbon Neutrality and It’s Emission Reduction

For anyone who doesn’t know: Carbon Neutrality or Net Zero CO2 Emission is the state of balance between the carbon dioxide when it is being emitted and removed from the atmosphere.

Although the definition might differ in business practice, organizations often consider the term “carbon neutrality” to include all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. During their approach to consider the ambition towards emissions reduction targets. Although there are many numbers of ways that can be taken into consideration to achieve the balance. The best approach is to only emit the amount of CO2 that can be naturally absorbed by the world’s forests and plants. As they act as carbon-absorbing agents during their photosynthesis process. As we are already familiar that plants take in CO2 from the air, to convert it into oxygen. Naturally helping in the process to reduce emissions.

Status Achievement and Further Plans

The seed farm was able to achieve carbon neutral status by reducing the carbon emission significantly. According to the reports, last year the seed farm purchased 213 tonnes. While this year it cut down to only produced 43 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Considering the number, the emission rate has been estimated to be around 170 tons of more carbon is under the process of being produced by the farm. This helped the farm to achieve its target of becoming the first carbon-neutral farm in India.

According to the Chief Minister: “almost 140 constituencies will be part of the Carbon neutral farms. Efforts to launch 13 more farms in Kerala are already under process.” He further stated that “agriculture makes up to 13 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions. To prevent gas emissions and climate regulations, neutral agriculture practices must be necessary.

Meanwhile, the state has previously set a target for 2050. Adopting various strategies to reduce carbon emissions, further reaching a net zero carbon emission. Such activities will become fruitful in the long run in favor of the environment, also maintaining its cleanliness over time.
